What To Expect When Getting Dental Implants

What To Expect When Getting Dental Implants.

Losing our teeth is not a certainty, in fact, many of us have lived our whole lives with our natural smiles. But circumstances, many of these out of our control, can make this a difficult prospect. The good news is that losing a tooth is no longer something that will forever impact our smile thanks to a variety of treatments offered by our Kamas, UT, dentist, especially dental implants. Of the available options, dental implants do require a longer initial investment of time, and we'll explore below what's involved in the process, but they pay dividends in their advantages over the others in terms of the way they look, the way they work, and how long they will last. For more information please reach out to Dr. Ammon Pitt and Dr. Marcus Pope of Gateway Dentistry.

On Healing

To understand why dental implants require a longer initial treatment than other restorations it's important to understand how they work and how much their approach to support differs from these others.

Our natural teeth are held in place at the root by bone and gum tissue, and so dental implants follow this as a guide by implanting a titanium post directly onto the bone of our jaw. A process called osseointegration will allow the bone to heal around the implant for a strong bond, and it's this healing period that is the longest-lasting of the treatment as this process completes.

After the healing period is over and the implant is secure it's when our dentist will move onto the final phase. It involves attaching something called an abutment onto the implant so that a crown can be bonded onto it. The result will be a tooth that even on very close inspection will be difficult to tell apart and that will not require special care, beyond good dental hygiene which can make the restoration last a lifetime.
